Lesson Plans For Kermit High School (August 24- August 28, 2015)

Instructor: Paul O. Briones

Biology will follow week one in C-Scope.  We will be covering Safety and the Scientific Method. Those that want to get ahead can go to my business site(VSU)  www.virtualscienceuniversity.com subscribe and watch and take notes on Lectures One and Three. Make sure you download the PowerPoint Slides on both lectures. I will be doing live these lectures in class but will also have a link to these VSU lectures via the Inter-Net and the Smart Board in my classroom.

All Lesson Plans follow this format:

1.) What I am doing or the TEK Objective is listed below under each day of the week.

2.) I will do a combination of strategies from Four Corners during Interaction of students to tactile Kinesthetic-PBL Based Startegy in the lab. In the Four Corner Study Groups, my students will use Purposeful Talk (Unit Vocabulary) to interact with their lab-study partner in a meaningful way with the lesson at hand.  Where I function more like a facilitator and much of the learning is happening from the BRIONES MILC Strategy where they use multiple inputs and the group leader re-teaches the concept to his or her partner.  I also use the auditory strategy called the "Lesson In The Lyric" (link to the "Lesson In The Lyric" for the first Unit on the Scientific Method:  https://www.reverbnation.com/professorpaul247/song/23331993-phat-cac, a strategy produced by yours truly using the Multiple Intelligence Theory of Dr. Howard Gardner from Harvard.  To learn more about what Dr. Gardner has to say about my MIT Approach to my Science Lessons, visit the following link: http://www.virtualscienceuniversity.com/news.aspx?id=034372a1-aaa1-4fb7-b4fe-051db0f379b7   To learn more about the PBL Based Strategy visit my business science education website at  the above business link highlighted in blue: http://www.virtualscienceuniversity.com

3.) I give a written Pre-Post Test for every single Unit in Biology and Anatomy & Physiology.  In IPC, I give an Oral Pre-Test and many times also a written Pre-Test.  In Biology, we have a Six Weeks CBA Test to determine where students are.

4.) In Biology and A & P, if a student does not make a 70 on the Post Test, they will listen to the Lecture again online or come to tutoring early in the morning during zero period or Jacket Time.  If student fails to meets its responsibility of doing the Lecture online and redoing the Post Test and making a 70 or above on the Post Test or Major Test, and refusing to come in for tutoring during zero period, the issue will be reported to you, the parent, and to Mr. Ford and the front office.

Monday: Expectations & Multiple Intelligence Survey

Tuesday: Scientific Method Lecture---PHAT CAC---TEK:  2A-2F

Wednesday: Scientific Method Lab: Distinguishing Between Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, & Control Variable TEKS: 2A-2F

Thursday: Continue With Lab! Once Scientific Method Lab is finished begin with writing the Lab Report. TEKS: 2A-2F

Friday: Safety Lecture & Safety Test---TEK 1A

These five activities will use the following Biology TEKS.  For Lesson specifics visit the C-Scope Public Page at: www.mycscope.us/module/profile/Account/LogOn

Scientific Process TEKS

B.1

Scientific processes. The student, for at least 40% of instructional time, conducts laboratory and field investigations using safe, environmentally appropriate, and ethical practices. The student is expected to:

B.1A   Demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations.

B.2

Scientific processes. The student uses scientific methods and equipment during laboratory and field investigations. The student is expected to:

B.2A   Know the definition of science and understand that it has limitations, as specified in subsection (b)(2) of this section.

B.2B Know that hypotheses are tentative and testable statements that must be capable of being supported or not supported by observational evidence. Hypotheses of durable explanatory power which have been tested over a wide variety of conditions are incorporated into theories.

B.2C Know scientific theories are based on natural and physical phenomena and are capable of being tested by multiple independent researchers. Unlike hypotheses, scientific theories are well-established and highly- reliable explanations, but they may be subject to change as new areas of science and new technologies are developed.

B.2D Distinguish between scientific hypotheses and scientific theories.

B.2F    Collect and organize qualitative and quantitative data and make measurements with accuracy and precision.

Anatomy & Physiology will do the same as Biology except that we will go over very carefully the Safety Lecture Segments dealing with biological spills since we will be dissecting cats in about four weeks and I hope I don't have any one throwing up as a result of seeing a cat being dissected.  We will spend four six weeks dissecting the cat.  Will be difficult at times but should be a very rewarding experience.  I have many of my ex-students in Anatomy & Physiology now taking the course in college and they say their high school experience really helped them.  Anatomy & Physiology will follow the same sequence and TEKS as biology for week one. The content of the lab exercises will be more intense as Anatomy & Physiology Students will measure the relationship between Heart Rate and Exercise and also the relationship between pH and the foods that we eat which will be in week two.  A & P students will watch the Dr. Carrasco Show, "Amputation by Choice" on Thursday and Friday.

IPC will do the same as Biology.  We will review all aspects of safety and also do a mini unit on the PHAT CAC which is an acronym for the Scientific Method.

Parents, hopefully this will help you get an idea as to what is going on in class.  I look forward to an awesome year!
